Presidents Message

Hello Members,

Your new officers are off and running. We were installed at the banquet on November 5th and conducted our first meeting on November 10th.  If you missed the banquet you missed a great time. Brian Harris and Wayne Yeager did a great job at putting together this year’s gala event and I helped to.  Brian Harris’s reverse raffle was a big hit once again. Also at the banquet Bill Cunningham was honored as life member number 47 and I was honored as life member 48.  I have received many awards throughout my years but this is certainly my most cherished honor.

Club members are stepping up to the plate and taking on jobs already.  Dave Myers is planning a swap shop for the second meeting in February.  Mike Bayes will be handling the pop detail.  Brian Harris has taken the position of Master CD.  Paul Fillmore will be our safety officer. Dave Howard and Dave Leach will be heading up the new field committee. The field committee so far has 8 members signed up. Their task is to work with the membership and follow through on development and implementation of a long term plan for our flying field. Thanks to all of you for taking an early lead and pitching in. There are plenty more jobs to come so be ready to take part.

Over the years I have seen a lot of good ideas and proposals fall by the wayside and never get acted on. We talk about things, we throw out great ideas and a year later we are discussing the same issue.  When you have a proposal sometimes you have to be a good salesman to make it happen.  I would suggest to all members to think their ideas through before presenting them to the membership.  Present your ideas and be prepared to explain to the club why we need to do it, what are the benefits to the club and what are the negatives if we fail to do it.  If there is going to be an expense try to have a ballpark cost.  And then, be prepared to follow through and make it happen. This is where the biggest breakdown occurs. If you are going to propose it, you should be prepared to write it, chair it, build it, buy it or install it.  Keeping this idea in mind can really help us make some progress.

It’s a tradition for many of us to fly on New Years Day. Wind, rain, snow, sub zero weather, come hell or high snows flying on New Years Day is a must. I recall some really ugly years where the snow has been falling, the visibility is low, the wind was howling and the temperature was below zero.  Take off, one quick lap, land it, and get back by the fireplace to lie to each other about our flying skills. Come on out and join the tradition, we usually start late morning.

Don’t forget we only meet once in November and once in December on the first meeting date of the month.

I would like to wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas season.

That’s the way I see it,

Jim Skolmowski
